E-cadherin, also known as epithelial cadherin, is a transmembrane protein that plays a crucial role in cell adhesion, cell signaling, and differentiation. It is primarily expressed in epithelial cells and is responsible for maintaining the structural integrity of tissues by mediating cell-to-cell adhesion. E-cadherin also participates in the formation of tight junctions, which regulate the passage of ions and molecules across epithelial barriers. Loss of E-cadherin expression is associated with the development and progression of various cancers, including breast, colon, and gastric cancers. Therefore, E-cadherin is considered a promising therapeutic target for cancer treatment.
